BioData.pt | ELIXIR-PT All Hands 2025

In this session will be provided an overview of ELIXIR Portugal main achievements in 2025 and present the development of the GLIM-BioData project. Highlights include the launch of the Microbiome and Biodiversity Communities, updates on OSCARS project submissions (including the funded Yeastract+), and briefings on ongoing EC and ELIXIR projects. The session will conclude with a look ahead to 2026 and the release of the report “BioData.pt | ELIXIR Portugal – a gateway for living data management".

This session will summarise the key outcomes of the previous day’s breakout discussions, highlighting the main conclusions, identified challenges, and proposed actions for 2026. The working groups will present consolidated insights to guide future community activities and strengthen alignment within the BioData.pt and ELIXIR-PT framework.

This session will present the new BioData.pt policy for research data management, outlining its principles, objectives, and implementation roadmap. It will discuss how the policy aligns with national and European guidelines, promotes FAIR and open data practices, and supports researchers in managing, sharing, and reusing data responsibly.

This session will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss the practical implementation of the new BioData.pt Research Data Management Policy. In breakout groups, attendees will explore key challenges, share best practices, and identify support needs across institutions. The discussion will feed into an action plan to ensure effective and sustainable policy adoption.

This session will introduce the vision and structure of the EOSC Federation, a major European initiative designed to enable open and secure access to research data and services across borders and disciplines. Participants will gain insight into the strategic importance of EOSC in supporting collaborative and data-driven science in Europe. In the second part of the session, we will address the EOSC strategy within ELIXIR Europe, highlighting the role of life sciences in shaping the EOSC ecosystem.

This session will bring together representatives from the Portuguese nodes of the EOSC-Life institutions, along with the EU lead of the MIRRI infrastructure. The panel will discuss how Portuguese life science infrastructures can strengthen their capacity to meet the challenges posed by the EOSC, particularly in the areas of training and the management of physical and computational resources. The discussion will also focus on identifying opportunities for alignment and collaboration among these national entities, ensuring a more coordinated contribution to the European research ecosystem and a sustainable integration within the EOSC framework.

This session will present the “Ready for BioData Management?” training programme and assess the need for a new training programme focused on bioinformatics essentials. The discussion will centre on identifying current training needs within the community and expanding the BioData.pt trainer pool by engaging new experts interested in contributing to future capacity-building initiatives.

This session, delivered by Mijke Jetten (ELIXIR Netherlands), is part of the final module of the course Training Data Stewards for Life Sciences. It will address the evolving role of data stewardship in research data management, highlighting efforts to define competencies, training pathways, and career development to strengthen and professionalise RDM practices across Europe.
